CX-5 raises the bar

With enhancements across the board, an all-new interior and a fully-revised body structure, Mazda’s CX-5 promises new levels of style, refinement and driving pleasure…

Building on the success of the previous generation CX-5 – a car that introduced Mazda’s Skyactiv technology and Kodo: Soul of Motion design philosophy – the all-new model has been designed to add impetus to the brand’s challenge in the compact SUV sector.

Through its combination of style, driving dynamics and efficiency, the original CX-5 helped to test convention in the sector. With global sales accounting for over 1,5-million units, the derivative made up about a quarter of the brand’s global sales volume. In South Africa it averaged about 350 units a month.

Now, with enhancements across the board, an all-new interior and a fully-revised body structure, the CX-5 looks to raise the bar, promising new levels of style, refinement and driving pleasure.

Designed using a concept of Refined Toughness, the second-generation model features a fashionable evolution of Mazda’s front-end styling, while sleeker sides and a lower roofline help to emphasise its solid stance and elegant proportions.

Inside, the brand’s human-centric development ethos results in a cabin that blends well-construed cockpit ergonomics with a sophisticated array of switchgear and a spacious and airy environment.

A product of Mazda’s Jinba-Ittai car-and-driver-as-one philosophy, the CX-5 has been programmed to deliver high levels of comfort without forsaking driver engagement. Particular attention has been paid to the reduction of noise and vibration levels within the cabin, and in this respect the model offers premium levels of comfort and refinement, while at the same time improving handling dynamics and driver involvement.

With torsional body rigidity increased by 15% against that of the predecessor and refinements made to steering, suspension and brakes – plus the introduction on the top-spec model of G-Vectoring Control (GVC), a software-based system that controls body roll – the new car feels more comfortable, refined and dynamically adept than the old.

Both Mazda’s Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual and Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmissions feature in the range, as does the latest generation of the brand’s intelligent i-Activ all-wheel drive system.

South Africa’s powertrain lineup comprises three engine options that offer powerful, linear driving performance and good environmental performance – Skyactiv-G 2,0-litre (121kW and 210Nm) and 2,5-litre (143kW and 257Nm) petrol-fueled plants as well as a Skyactiv-D 2,2-litre (129kW and 420Nm) diesel unit.

All models feature a generous standard equipment tally. Updates for entry-level Active derivatives include LED head and front fog lamps, auto headlamp leveling, newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels, rear ventilation, a USB port for rear seat passengers and auto door locking. Keyless start, cruise control, hill launch assist and a reversing camera are among other features.

Dynamic spec models get 19-inch alloys, leather upholstered seats, eight-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat and auto fold mirrors, while models wearing Individual insignia get a 10-speaker Bose sound system, a head-up display, a powerlift tail gate as well as advanced safety features such as Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane keeping Assist, Smart City Brake Support and Driver Attention Alert.

The top of the range Akera derivative – powered by a 2,2-litre diesel engine that produces – features all-wheel-drive and G-Vectoring control.

Other highlights include two new optional paint colours: Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Machine Grey Metallic. Both colours use Mazda’s unique three-layer Takuminuri paint technology and, compared to the previous CX-5’s Soul Red Metallic paint, Soul Red Crystal increases brightness by approximately 20% and depth by 50% while the grey achieves high-contrast shadows and a high-density finish to give a realistic metallic feel.
